Who Is Eligible To Work In Canada?
With a few exceptions, most foreign nationals require a permit to work in Canada.
For the majority of applicants, a work visa application must be accompanied by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and a Canadian employment offer. Foreign workers may occasionally submit a work permit application without an LMIA or an employment offer. An example of this is the spouse of a person who already has a work or study permit in Canada or who recently graduated from a Canadian Educational Institute (DLI).
How To Obtain A Canadian Work Permit
The procedure for obtaining a Canadian work permit varies greatly depending on the type of work permit sought. For instance, as part of their authorization for a study permit, overseas students studying in Canada are frequently permitted to work part-time.
Most secure work permit applications require a foreign national to have an official job offer from a Canadian employer-backed up by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Even LMIA-exempt or exempt from requiring a work permit should know the documentation to ensure entry into Canada. The two primary methods for obtaining a work permit in Canada are a closed (limited) work permit and an open work permit.
A foreign person who receives a closed work permit must continue to work for the same employer in the same place unless their work permit is modified because closed work permits are linked to specific employers.
